Azura means beautiful blue and the name could not be more apt for this location, on the northwest of Benguerra Island, surrounded by miles of pure white sand and tranquil turquoise seas.
Our public areas are open to the beach and sea with amazing vistas across calm blue waters to the Indian Ocean beyond. Furnished with cool contemporary cottons and the textures of Africa, they are open to the breezes, in harmony with nature. Comfortable, simple, spacious and chic.
Wander in and out as you please. Find a quiet corner to read a book or a place to share the stories of your day with others. Sip the cocktail of the day on the beach with your feet in the sand, or relax in the Star Bar over a game of Bau. Browse our collection of handcrafted artefacts, designer clothing and jewellery at the Trading Store, including a selection of beachwear by Heidi Klein. The mod cons are there too if you need them, with TV and internet discreetly tucked away in our library.

Food is a key focus at Azura Benguerra Island. The resort’s top international chef’s signature dishes will not disappoint, and nor will the extensive wine cellar, which includes fine wines flown direct from the owner’s chateau in France’s Loire Valley.
Fresh local Mozambican produce, much of it home caught and home grown, is put together with contemporary style and flair.
Where to eat is as much of a decision as what to eat. The fine dining restaurant has magnificent uninterrupted views; the Gheko Deck offers informal dining with your feet in the sand, there is also the Star Bar and a wine cellar, which doubles up as a dining venue!

Accommodation
Each air-conditioned villa has its own infinity plunge pool and beachside sala and has all the creature comforts and designer touches expected from a luxury boutique resort, set off by beautifully carved beams and traditional artwork beneath a local thatch roof.
Each villa is a stone’s throw from the beach, yet designed with privacy and seclusion in mind. Nestled amidst the indigenous trees and bush, the villas have been painstakingly built to create your own private sanctuary.
All villas have their own pool, beach frontage, outdoor sala, sundeck, daybeds, double outdoor shower and beach shower. Interiors feature extra-length king-size beds (twins available), a full bathroom, a dressing room, hairdryers, a mini-bar, international plug points, air conditioning and private butler service. At least 110 m2 under roof and 645 m2 total private area.
In addition to these facilities, the Villa Amizade has 2 bedrooms both en-suite and the Presidential Villa has 3 bedrooms, all en-suite plus a sitting/dining area, a larger pool and extended decking with Jacuzzi.

Books (fiction) are placed in the villa (as well as reference books in the
library/lounge areas)

- Meal settings range from informal ‘foot in the sand’ dining experiences, picnics
in secluded spots, to dinner by candlelight on the beach beneath the stars, to
feasting in the comfort and intimacy of your own villa, to tasting dinners in the
Jellyfish Restaurant. As many meals as possible are served outdoors. - Dining Mozambican style is a slow relaxed affair, so please advise your Host if
you are in a rush. - Special dining events include a more formal seven-course tasting menu at least
once a week, as well as Mozambican seafood evenings, also once a week. The
tasting menu is a good opportunity for a dressier evening. - Spawning season (beginning of October to end of November) may affect the
availability of fresh crayfish. At this time the netting of fish is also illegal and
fish supplies dramatically decrease, although some are still available, caught on
the line. As we purchase locally from the fishing community, and try never to serve
any frozen fish or seafood, we ask for understanding over this period, and the
importance of preserving natural resources. - Should you have particular dietary requirements it is advisable to alert the
Retreat as far in advance as possible, as some specialist ingredients may take as
long as 8 weeks to get to us.

Entertainment & Sports
Azura Benguerra Island, Mozambique has a host of entertainment and sporting options to enjoy and experience in Mozambique.
The majority of activities at Azura are based in and around the sea. Guests can snorkel, dive, fly fish or big game fish, swim with dolphins, track down humpback whales on their migration, or go out with the Dugong Protection Team and search for the shy endangered mammal.
For those who want to stay on land, they can tour the island, climb the sand dunes or visit the island’s lakes. Alternatively, they can take a dhow and picnic on a deserted beach.
Azura offers a range of outdoor guest activities, by boat or landrover, with light refreshments and drinks provided. A number of these are guided activities where you have a real chance to learn about the wonderful environment that surrounds us here at Azura. Guided activities are accompanied by our Local Guides who know this area intimately. Activity duration & departure times listed over the following pages are used only as a guideline and can usually be specially tailored to suit your schedule or interests.
Please discuss your requests with your butler/host and Azura’s Activity Coordinators who are available each evening at 7.00 pm in the Star Bar. Activities are very popular so please try to plan early!
Private Beach Dinners
Azura Staff are creative souls. Your host will set up a private dinner on the beach in front of your villa, surrounded by candles arranged in the sand.
Alternatively, you can choose to have this candle-lit on your deck or beneath your sala. They normally like to do it on guests last night at Azura but if you would prefer to do it another day please discuss this with your host. We offer the first of these included with your stay, but for a small additional cost you can do it a second time or even upgrade to a seafood barbecue and we’ll come and cook fresh seafood in front of you while you sit under African skies!
Time: Usually your last evening with us, otherwise $30 per person
Kindly note that much of our seafood is locally sourced and is subject to availability therefore we require at least 24hrs notice for special requests.
